Parents
This section is aimed squarely at making you think about, or even better, doing something for your older offspring who have just passed their driving tests, or have done so relatively recently.
Unless some effort is made to guide them, they are now alone to develop the skills of everyday driving from the level of a learner – which is what they were on the morning of their driving test – to that of a competent and sensible adult driver.
We cannot hold their hands for them, or force them to behave in any way they do not wish to but we can guide and advise them as they gain experience and mature, without being too old-fashioned about it (we hope).
The late teens and early twenties age group is known by the insurance and road safety industries as particularly vulnerable to accidents in vehicles. Please encourage them to join Motorskill – we do not mind who pays!!!!
The cost is deliberately kept very low - £10 per year -inclusive of the assessment. The subscription also covers the cost of some events – practical exercises, talks, etc. – and a quarterly newsletter. The initial year costs £20, with a longer period set aside for the assessment to allow you to ‘settle in’, as well as to cover the cost of membership badges, etc. There is also ample opportunity to take other additional advice from the assessors, some of whom are available and willing to help in this way at the various events which are held from time to time.
Other activities are also arranged – trips to a skid pan, talks from people with relevant interests, even treasure hunts and go-karting have been on the list. Such events are arranged when the need or the desire of the members supports them, rather than at regular intervals. All the activities and events aim to provide both a little learning and a lot of enjoyment.
